Man pleads guilty to voting illegally

The second of two felons charged by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office with voting illegally in the 2004 presidential election pleaded guilty today.

Kevin L. Cameron, 35, of the 1700 block ofN. 18th St., was still on parole for a 2001 felony fleeing conviction when he cast his ballot. He now faces more time behind bars at a March 17 sentencing. District Attorney Bruce Landgraf is to recommend Cameron serve 45 days in the county House of Correction under the plea agreement.

Cameron's conviction follows that of of Daryl Robinson, 29, of the 2900 block of N. 48th St., in December for the same offense in the November 2004 election. Robinson was sentenced to 120 days in the House of Correction.

Landgraf said his office is still investigating other apparent instances of felons voting in that election based on a review of voter records.

Project Vote worker pleads guilty to forgery

One of two voter-registration workers charged with turning in bogus registration cards before the November 2004 elections pleaded guilty today to forgery and was sentenced to 45 days in jail and a year of probation.

Marcus L. Lewis, 24, of the 800 block of W. Galena St. in Milwaukee, had been charged with five felony counts election fraud, misconduct in office and three counts of forgery and pleaded guilty to one forgery count in exchange for the other charges being dropped.

According to a criminal complaint filed in the case, Lewis was fired by Project Vote after he got caught submitting a registration card in the name of a dead person While he was a paid worker for the national voter-registration organization, Lewis had previously turned in duplicate cards for the same voter on "numerous" occasions, the complaint alleged.

In sentencing Lewis, Reserve Judge Russell W. Stamper Sr. ordered a two-year stayed sentence one year in prison, one year on extended supervision that Lewis faces if he breaks probation.

The other Project Vote worker similarly charged with election fraud, Urelene Lilly, 48, is scheduled for trial in March.
